Twenty Five

HAVING SUCCESSFULLY cleared the lobby and released the lock on the main entrance doors to the complex, Cav rushed to the lift. He took a quick glance at the reception area behind before stepping into the golden enclosure which would take him to the penthouse floor. It looked good. There wasn’t a trace of anything untoward. Certainly nothing to alarm the untrained eye.

There was still the concierge’s body to dispose of but that was safely hidden and could wait. The absence of anyone on the desk might raise questions with some residents, but luckily none had attempted to gain entry. No doubt they were busy having after work drinks at some swanky wine bar.

Cav’s foot impatiently tapped on the lift floor as it slowly ascended.

Lewis was taking his bloody time changing the locks. They had to get to Luna and help the others out, so what was keeping him? There hadn’t been a lock yet that his brother was unable to either break or fix.

The lift doors opened and Cav stepped into the penthouse level corridor. His hackles immediately rose. He opened his mouth to call his brother’s name and then stopped, his hand moving to his gun. It was too quiet.

Creeping along the edge of the corridor towards the apartment door, the rustle of Cav’s jacket brushing the wall was amplified in the uncomfortable silence.

His heart raced. Lewis would be humming a song as he worked. He always did, yet there was nothing...

As the door came into view, Cav’s stomach lurched with trepidation. It was open...

Flattening himself against the wall to the side of the door, he waited, his ears primed for movement. He slipped his head around the doorjamb and glanced into the immense hallway of the apartment, finding it empty.

With his gun in front of him, Cav stepped inside, then stopped, his eyes moving to the floor underneath his boots. A whimper escaped his mouth as he realised he was standing in a pool of blood.

Whose blood? Lewis’s? An enforcer’s?

His heart thrashed in his chest. It was someone’s blood, but where was the person who it had spilled from?

His eyes scoured the marble floor. The pool of blood had no obvious trail leading from it. Someone had leaked blood - an immense amount, but left no hint of where they had moved to afterwards. The pool was localised in this one place.

Apart from there...

The arc of blood sprayed onto the high ceiling made Cav go cold.

Fuck! It couldn’t be Lewis’s. Not his brother. No!

With a clenched jaw, he moved further into the hallway, his boots imprinting size twelve bloody footprints in his wake. It was then that he heard the voice - a voice that didn’t belong to his brother.

It was a one way conversation. Someone was on the phone.

And it was coming from in there...

Cav moved swiftly and silently towards the large double doors at the end of the hallway. Stopping, he held his breath so not to miss a word of what was being said.
